![]() Like the URBACT Local Groups it is designed to allow participation of diverse stakeholders in thinking, designing and enacting the improvements of the neighbourhood. Co-creation is understood as a process by which people, including artists, inhabitants and public servants, as well as private stakeholders, are able to get over differences and work together to improve the situation of what are considered as deprived neighbourhoods of a city, from an equal footing.Ĭo-creation, initiated by academics and NGOs in this project, is close to the URBACT method in its purposes. One of the objectives of the co-creation research project is to define in more depth the co-creation method. Here I would like to share some reflections from an urban sociologist point of view about the city of Rio de Janeiro, Santa Marta and the co-creation process. I had my ideas and conceptions, some of which were validated or challenged by the five days co-creation workshop I took part in in August 2018, as part of the co-creation research project. Most urban planners have some understanding of what a favela is and what life there can be. Recently, the urban reality of Rio and its social movements have been especially exposed to the world’s eyes in 20 when the city hosted the Football World Cup and the Olympic Games. ![]() Brazil is well known for its gated communities and favelas, which reality has been exposed through the years in literature and films as reported on by Christina Horwath in her previous blog post. The team includes a Local Coordinator, resident of Santa Marta who manages the communication with the participants and the workspace, a Community Mobilizer and a project coordinator who oversees the day-to-day strategy and running of the project.Most urban planners (and many travellers too) know that Brazilian cities are an extreme example of vicinity within the city between poor and rich areas. The operational team is based at 295 Rua São Clemente, the headquarters of our organisation, which is a secure location directly opposite the favela entrance. The board of directors and supervisory board comprises individuals with a mix of nationalities and considerable experience in community projects and business management in Brazil and internationally. Our goal is to ignite a transformative potential in these young people with a long-term and far-reaching impact.Īfter a pilot year, Project Hub was formalised in 2020 as a non-profit organisation. The concept and methodology for Project Hub was based on the findings from of a scoping study that identified a need to build the hope and aspirations of young people in the favela community in their futures. However in recent years it has experienced issues relating to armed and violent clashes between gangs. ![]() ![]() With more than 1,200 houses and 5,000 inhabitants, Santa Marta was historically known for being “pacified” for a number of years. The initiative is centred around Christian values, to love and support disadvantaged people in the community, regardless of gender, race, colour or religious affiliation, and is supported by three local churches. Project Hub is a community development initiative to support local entrepreneurship and business innovation amongst young people in a favela community, Santa Marta, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. ![]()
